Hommage a René Magritte
This artwork was created for a competition in New Zealand at the Auckland Art Museum. January 2013 Shanghai.The theme was René Magritte and my ideas about it. I was given the sub-theme "Tobacco and Pipes." You can see the result here. It was my entry piece for a two-week art residency in Auckland.The artwork is a collage on a white canvas, which is unusual for me and has been pretreated and smooth. For the outer collage, I painted a cardboard bowl and placed clay pipes on it, which I had previously painted with sand and Chinese black ink. I also used sand and paint as glue; it lasts forever.
Using a special throwing technique, I threw Chinese ink onto the white-painted surface of the image, which had previously been painted, dabbed, and applied with a spatula. At the same time, it creates the effect of the surface shattering into nothingness...
