Bird view of the Lighthouse July 2011
‘Birdview of the Lighthouse’
Acrylic, Mixed Media on Canvas
80cm x 80cm
The original idea for this artwork was based on a desire to be by the sea, using a bird’s eye view of a lighthouse as the starting point. This circular form of visual representation in the painting also makes reference to the traditional Spanish technique “mandalas” of drawing circles. From this, Conny then changed direction to describe the balance within nature by introducing imagery of butterflies and bird’s wings.
The painting is clearly divided into two parts where the left hand side of the canvas is painted in brighter, sharper colours and full block tones such as red and green, in contrast to the right hand side painted in darker, softer colours and half tones such as ochre and orange. This immediately makes reference to the dichotomy between the brighter and darker sides of life, the good and bad, almost as if they are fighting for balance with each other, like the balance in nature. The unexpected and almost absurd dashes of the colour turquoise stand as an emotional reference point for hope within the conflict of movement and flow in the circular forms created by the butterflies and bird’s wings. This fluidity and use of symbols depict how life is not as straightforward as one thinks, yet at the same time, it presents a sense of hope in life that things will and can change, that you can fly away physically or emotionally to do what you want to do with a freedom to find happiness. It is an observation regarding a feeling in life, that things can be brighter and easier, towards “A Brighter Future”.
